Dizziness Treatments in Pompano Beach, Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale, FL

Our inner ears are very important to not only hearing, but balance as well. When we get dizzy for no reason, also known as vertigo, it can mean there is something wrong with how our inner ear is communicating with our brain. This can cause you to lose balance, feel lightheaded, and feel nauseous. There are many reasons why someone may feel dizziness, whether it be vertigo or a symptom of a serious medical problem. If you experience ongoing dizziness, contact Dr. Lapco for further examination and treatment options.

Common Causes of Dizziness

Acoustic Neuroma – this condition occurs when a benign growth, which is non-cancerous, grows on a cranial nerve that travels from the inner ear to the brain. This growth usually develops slowly over years, and can cause consistent dizziness because of the disruption in communication from the ear to the brain.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – the most common cause of vertigo, BPPV is caused by calcium carbonate crystals freely moving into the wrong parts of the ear. Although these particles should be enclosed in a gel inside a specific part of the ear, some are released, causing dizziness when the head is moved. There isn’t a known cause of BPPV and it usually resolves itself naturally.

Inner Ear Infection – dizziness may be a symptom of inflammation of the inner ear. For more information, please visit our informational ear infection page here.

Meniere’s Disease – symptoms include long period of dizziness, lasting an hour or more. Other symptoms include ringing in the ears, loss of hearing and congestion in the ear. These symptoms are caused by a buildup of fluid in the inner ear. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this Meniere’s Disease, however, medications can help ease some of these symptoms.

Migraines – can cause dizziness associated with vertigo. Other symptoms may include ringing in the ears and hearing loss in more severe cases. However, examinations are necessary to find the exact cause of dizziness and whether it’s related to your migraine headaches.
