Nasal Surgery Q&A

What should I know about nasal surgery?

As an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, Dr. Lapco has extensive training and experience in surgery to treat the many conditions affecting your nose.

He always begins your treatment with the most appropriate conservative therapies. However, some nasal conditions need surgery to repair the tissues and provide long-lasting relief for your symptoms.

When would I need nasal surgery?

The top reasons for nasal surgery include a chronic stuffy nose, allergies, nasal obstruction, and ongoing sinus problems such as sinusitis. Surgery targets the underlying cause of your symptoms, which may be:

  • Enlarged turbinates
  • Deviated septum
  • Nasal polyps
  • Blocked sinus passages
  • Narrowed nostrils

Aging can also lead to changes that block your breathing and require surgical repair. For example, cartilage naturally weakens as you get older. As a result, the supporting structures in your nose droop or collapse.

What type of nasal surgery might I receive?

Dr. Lapco performs a wide range of surgical procedures, including:

  • Polypectomy (polyp removal)
  • Septoplasty (deviated septum repair)
  • Turbinoplasty (turbinate removal)
  • Turbinate reduction
  • Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty often refers to cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance of your nose. However, rhinoplasty can also be a medically necessary, functional procedure to improve your ability to breathe.

For example, you may need to have your nose reshaped if the cartilage droops and interferes with breathing.

What is endoscopic nasal surgery?

Endoscopic nasal surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that Dr. Lapco performs in the office using local anesthesia. During this type of surgery, he uses a thin, flexible scope that easily goes into your nose and through the nasal passages. The endoscope is equipped with lighting and a camera that sends images to a monitor.

There are two primary types of endoscopic surgeries:

Nasal endoscopy

Dr. Lapco does nasal endoscopy to diagnose the cause of problems such as blockages, congestion, nasal discharge, infections, and nosebleeds. He may take a biopsy or remove a foreign object during a nasal endoscopy.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)

As its name suggests, FESS treats sinus infections by reopening and cleaning a clogged and infected sinus. After treating the sinus, Dr. Lapco may insert a PROPEL® implant to minimize scarring and inflammation.

Dr. Lapco also uses FESS to remove or reposition structures that affect your breathing. For example, he may remove polyps, correct a deviated septum, or reduce the size of your turbinates.
