Laryngitis is an infection of the larynx, which contributes to how our voice works. The larynx is the top portion of the trachea and allows air to enter in the lungs, while not allowing food and drinks from entering the lungs. Attributes of laryngitis include coughing, difficulty breathing for children, hoarseness and loss of voice. Laryngitis might also be caused by acid reflux or nerve damage on the vocal chords. Treatment is limited for laryngitis, usually healing by itself within two weeks. To help heal your laryngitis, you should increase air moisture by humidifiers, drinking water and no strenuous talking or yelling.
Tonsillitis, or the inflammation of the tonsils, is caused by virus or bacterial infections. The purpose of tonsils is to block viruses or bacteria from entering into the body as part of the immune system. When these infections occur, the throat may appear to be red, swollen, or have a white coat covering the tonsils. This infection can be very troublesome, arising symptoms like difficulty breathing and swallowing, sore throat, fever, chills and tender lymph nodes on the side of the neck. To treat tonsillitis, Dr. Lapco will prescribe antibiotics to heal the inflammation, generally penicillin. If you experience a recurrence of tonsillitis, the tonsils may need to be removed through surgery called a tonsillectomy. Tonsillectomy is a very common procedure to resolve tonsillitis, sleeping disorders or breathing problems related to large tonsils.
Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the pharynx, which is the tissue between the tonsils and the larynx. This can cause a sore throat, feeling painful and scratchy, making it difficult to swallow and breath. Pharyngitis is generally accompanied by laryngitis and the inflammation naturally heals itself with plenty of fluids, rest and an increase in air humidity through a humidifier.
The epiglottis is the flap of tissue that blocks food from entering in your windpipe when you swallow. The swelling of epiglottis, called epiglottitis, can be caused by infection, burns from hot liquids, or injury. This condition is dangerous because it can block the flow of air to your lungs and also make it extremely difficult to swallow. Epiglottitis is a medical emergency and should receive medical attention immediately.
